St. Mary's Island has its own primary school, with secondary schools and colleges available in the Chatham area.

Chatham Boy and Girl Grammar Schools are located only a few miles from the Island, together with a Girls Grammar and the Sir Joseph Williamson Mathematical School in nearby Rochester. The world's oldest choir school, Kings School, is also located in Rochester.

A wide and expanding range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses are available at the Chatham Maritime campus. The campus for the University of Greenwich, University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church College is currently expanding with student numbers due to rise from nearly 7,000 to an anticipated 15,000 by 2012.
